These small steps help me nurture virtues within myselftranslated

Anna MASLOVA
When I hear the word "virtue," I imagine a tiny sprout or even a seed. But how can I grow trees of virtues within myself? What can I do for this?
Sometimes from acquaintances, I hear the opposition between psychology and spiritual life. As if one must either pray, fast, hope in God, or use psychological methods. I believe that these are two wings helping to reach the goal.
For example, I am quite irritable and impatient by nature. Especially when my two children do not listen. And what helps is a simple exercise: when I feel myself boiling over, I notice my breathing. I take a deep breath—and exhale, repeating this several times. And between my irritation and reaction, there appears space for choice. I can scream or act differently, more calmly and wisely. Thus, I gradually cultivate patience.
Humility is harder for me. Some cases are ambiguous: when to submit, accept what is happening, and when firmly say: "No, this cannot happen to me"?
Meditation on the words of the Optina Elders helps: "...In all my words and deeds guide my thoughts and feelings. In all unforeseen circumstances do not let me forget that everything is given by Thee."
