Eighth Sunday of Matthew: Matthew 14:14–22

The passage of the feeding of the five thousand (Matt. 14:14–22) reveals the mystery of God’s love for humanity and of Eucharistic life. It is not merely an astonishing and miraculous multiplication of food, but a revelation of the way Christ gathers and nourishes His new people.

The phrase “He had compassion on them” reveals the depth of divine mercy. Christ’s compassion is not simply human emotion; it is the very movement of divine love toward the world. Christ sees the crowd as a suffering body, fragmented by illness, hunger, and spiritual confusion, and for that reason “He healed their sick.” Healing comes before feeding, showing that Christ’s work is complete: it concerns body and soul, the present and the eternal future. The feeding is not simply an act of social concern, but the fruit of the saving presence of the God-man.

The dialogue with the disciples reveals Christ’s teaching of the Church. The disciples see reality through the lens of scarcity: “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” Common human reasoning leads to the request that the crowd be sent away, so that each person may take care of himself.
