A friend refuses to help. What should I do?translated

October 22, 2026 · 1 min read

Reader question:

I always fight with my childhood friend over money issues. He is a normal, good person, it’s just that when I ask for help, he always refuses. And when he needs it, I help as much as I can. If there is any misunderstanding between us, I apologize. And recently I asked him to help out: loans, health problems. He says: you are an adult, decide for yourself, I already solve all my problems myself. Nobody helps me, I'm used to doing everything myself. Should I communicate with him? I blocked him, let go of my emotions. I forgive him, I don’t hold any grudges, let him live his own life. I just don't want my kindness to be taken advantage of. If I stop further communication with him, will that not be a sin? I just don’t want to quarrel, and it’s better to live alone than to hold a grudge against someone.

Mikhail

Priest's answer:

Priest Evgeniy CHEBYKIN

Hello, Mikhail.

If you have a choice: continue communicating with a friend and periodically quarrel over money, or break off all communication with him, then the second option seems more reasonable to me.

With one caveat - let all this not be forever. I think it would be good if you determined for yourself how much time you will need to recover...
