The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States has designated Sunday, July 26, as Prison Ministry Awareness Sunday, when hundreds of Orthodox parishes across jurisdictions will speak about the care of the Church for those in prison. Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry, which has served for nearly three decades, reunites incarcerated parents with their children through recorded readings of picture books sent home, and its Clergy Corps gathers priests and deacons committed to visiting prisons near them. The Ministry of the Interior of Estonia has given the Estonian Christian Orthodox Church, which is historically connected with the Moscow Patriarchate, six months to comply with amendments to the Churches and Congregations Act that entered into force on June 27. The law prohibits religious organizations in the country from maintaining ties with foreign religious bodies that the state considers a threat to national security; the deadline for compliance is December 28. On July 8 the Russian Orthodox Church honored Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom, patrons of marriage, on the day observed in Russia as the Day of Family, Love and Faithfulness. Hierarchs led celebrations at the Holy Trinity Convent in Murom, where the relics of the saints rest, and festive family processions in many cities united couples who have lived together for decades with those recently engaged. Patriarch Daniel of Romania addressed the Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada, held in Montreal from July 3 to 5. In his message the Patriarch emphasized the vital role of women in the Church and in society and called for the strengthening of the Christian family. A new auxiliary bishop has been ordained for the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, after the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church elected Bishop Iachint at its session on July 2. The ordination strengthens pastoral care for the growing Romanian Orthodox communities of Oceania. (OrthoChristian, https://orthochristian.com/178779.html)

Patriarch John X of Antioch received officials of the Romanian Embassy in Damascus and spoke of the strong and longstanding ties between the Patriarchate of Antioch and Romania at the ecclesiastical and national levels. "We enjoy the best of relations with Romania, both as a Church and as a people," the Patriarch said. In the Catholic world, Pope Leo XIV has begun his summer rest at Castel Gandolfo, the historic papal residence south of Rome, where he will remain until July 27 with all audiences suspended. The pause follows an intensive first half of the year in which the Pope addressed themes from artificial intelligence to war and took decisive steps in the internal governance of the Roman Catholic Church. The General Synod of the Church of England opened its July session in York, meeting from July 10 to 14 with a presidential address to the assembly. Earlier this month the Anglican Consultative Council, meeting in Belfast, voted 72 to 8 to leave unchanged the role of the Archbishop of Canterbury as the spiritual figurehead of the Anglican Communion. A useful example of accessible formation for parish workers comes from the Lutheran world: the SYAT Collective of the Grand Canyon Synod offers a free online series for youth ministry leaders, with sessions on annual ministry planning on July 23, intergenerational ministry on August 20, and creative fundraising on September 17. Such low-cost continuing education models are easily adapted to Orthodox parish youth work.

The prison ministry piece hits home—our study group at Holy Trinity here in Chicago read about those recorded picture books last month, and a couple guys started volunteering at the county jail. The Estonia deadline sounds rough though, six months to cut ties like that.
