Did the Third Ecumenical Council Establish the Honor Given to the Virgin Mary?

Sometimes one hears the accusation that honor toward the Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Lord, supposedly appeared suddenly in the fifth century and was imposed by the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus in 431 AD. This view does not withstand serious historical and theological examination. The Council of Ephesus did not “invent” honor toward the Theotokos, nor did it introduce any new “worship” of her person. What it did was defend the already existing faith of the Church against the Nestorian false teaching.

Yes, that's right. The Council of Ephesus simply defended what the faithful were already singing and worshiping - "Virgin Virgin, rejoice". They did not invent anything new, but simply cut off Nestorius' heresy that Christ was an ordinary man. Thanks for the clear text, it's useful to be reminded.

Yes, I agree. The article nicely reminds us that in Ephesus they only defended the old faith against Nestorius, they did not invent anything new. Here in Michalovce, we have been singing the same thing in the church for years - "Virgin Virgin, rejoice". Good text, people need to be reminded of that sometimes.
