Did Jesus Disrespect the Theotokos at the Wedding in Cana?

In the Gospel according to John, we read the story of the wedding in Cana. There, the mother of Jesus notices that the wine has run out and says to her Son: “Οἶνον οὐκ ἔχουσι” — “They have no wine” (John 2:3). Christ replies: “Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, γύναι; οὔπω ἥκει ἡ ὥρα μου” — “What is that to Me and to you, woman? My hour has not yet come” (John 2:4).

This phrase is often misunderstood and misused. Some read it according to modern linguistic standards and conclude that Jesus spoke to His mother in a cold or offensive way. From this comes the well-known accusation: “Christ disrespected His mother, while Christians honor her.”

However, this interpretation cannot stand either philologically or theologically. It isolates one phrase from the narrative, ignores the language of the period, and overlooks the continuation of the story, where Jesus ultimately performs the miracle. If there were truly any disrespect, it would have to be evident in the narrative as a whole. Yet the exact opposite is the case.
