Department for Emergency Situations Installs New Mountain Shelter in Maramureș Mountainstranslated

July 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The Department for Emergency Situations installed a new shelter for those in difficulty in mountain areas on Tuesday. The container was placed in the Maramureș Mountains near Pop Ivan Peak, at an altitude of approximately 1,850 meters.

The installation involved collaboration between the General Aviation Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Salvamont Maramureș.

The container, weighing approximately 1,200 kg, was transported to the installation site by helicopter, as the area is inaccessible to ground vehicles.

The Department for Emergency Situations commends the dedication of all involved and reaffirms its commitment to continuing the development of intervention capabilities, providing tourists and mountain enthusiasts with a safer environment through investments in infrastructure and operational preparedness.

The “Refuge of Hope” represents the realization of a partnership signed last year between the Department for Emergency Situations and LIONS Romania – District 124 Romania. In the coming period, ten more such shelters will be installed.

These shelters are designed to provide immediate shelter and support to those in need.

Mary ThomasVârful Pop Ivan... that's near where my cousin took my daughter hiking in 1998. She said the views over Maramureș were like looking into a church fresco—so much peace. Glad they're putting up these refuges now.

Basil YoungMary, that's beautiful—our churches use frescoes to capture that same heavenly peace, like the ones in St. George's here in Wichita. Is your daughter still hiking those trails today?
