Cornell Catholic Community issues letter after campus protests

Catholic clergy at Cornell University issued a pastoral letter encouraging students to engage in “difficult public discussions” with charity and courage, after campus protests over the universityʼs handling of alleged sexual assaults involving members of the Chi Phi fraternity in 2024.
The Cornell Catholic Community, led by Associate Director Deacon Matthew Hall and priest-chaplains Father Daniel McMullin and Father David Cataline, said in an Oct. 7 statement that campus ministry is offering prayer, pastoral care, and support to students affected by sexual violence.
A former Cornell student’s civil lawsuit alleges fraternity members sexually assaulted her at the Ithaca, New York, campus, leading to scrutiny of Cornell’s disciplinary process. New York Attorney General Letitia James has opened a criminal investigation into the handling of allegations.
