Church of Greece to hold extraordinary Holy Synod meeting – What’s on the Agenda

The Standing Holy Synod of the Church of Greece will convene an extraordinary meeting on Thursday, October 22, 2026, with developments concerning St. Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai expected to dominate the agenda.
According to information obtained by Orthodox Times , the main purpose of the meeting is to brief the Synod’s hierarchs on the ongoing situation surrounding the historic monastery and its relations with the Egyptian authorities.
The internal dispute that has divided the monastery’s 14-member brotherhood continues to complicate efforts to reach a mutually beneficial agreement with the Egyptian state.
The situation has become particularly urgent ahead of October 24, when Egypt’s Supreme Court of Cassation is expected to issue its ruling on the matter.
Despite earlier hopes that the decision might be postponed, current information indicates that the court is expected to proceed without further delay.
Notably, even some members of the Standing Holy Synod were reportedly unaware of the reason for the extraordinary meeting when news of its convocation first began to circulate.
