Honoring Saint Sylvester, Archbishop of Omsk in Taratranslated

July 18, 2026 · 1 min read

July 16, 2026, the day of the discovery of the relics of the holy martyr Sylvester, Archbishop of Omsk.

With the blessing of Bishop Vikenty of Tara and Tyukalinsk, on the eve of the holiday, the all-night vigil in the Spassky Cathedral was performed by the sacristan of the cathedral, Archimandrite Thaddeus (Cherednichenko), and the rector of the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul in the village of Zalivino, Tara region, and the cleric of the cathedral, Hieromonk Theodosius (Dolgov).

During the polyeleos, the icon of St. Sylvester of Omsk with a particle of his relics and part of the robe in which the saint was dressed during burial was carried from the altar through the Royal Doors by the serving priests to the middle of the church.

The image was made in 2025, in honor of the 130th anniversary of the Omsk diocese, and was donated to the Tara diocese by Metropolitan Dionysius of Omsk and Irtysh.

On the day of the holiday, July 16, the Divine Liturgy in the Spassky Cathedral, with the blessing of Bishop Vincent, was performed by the sacristan of the cathedral, Archimandrite Thaddeus (Cherednichenko) and the rector of the Transfiguration Church in the village of Lozhnikovo, Tarsky district, Priest Georgy Surdushkin.

At the end of the Liturgy, the clergy performed glorification in front of the icon of St. Sylvester of Omsk.

Thank you for this article. It is touching to see that the icon with the particle of relics and a piece of the riza was presented by Metropolitan Dionysius on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the Omsk Eparchy. I hope that the Liturgy of July 16 brought together many people at Tara.

Thanks for the article. I remembered how they took out the icon with the relic particle and the piece of rice through the royal doors at the polyeleum - a beautiful moment. Did many people come to the Liturgy on the 16th?

Yes, the moment with the icon taken out through the royal doors to the polyeleum was really impressive, you could feel the piety in the whole church. A lot of people came to the Liturgy on July 16, especially from the surrounding villages, but it wasn't quite as crowded as at the great shrines. Have you ever been to a service with relics brought like this?

Yes, the moment with the icon taken out through the royal doors to the polyeleum stayed with me as well, as if I could feel the presence of the saint closer. At the Liturgy there were several people from nearby villages, but enough room to move around. Have you ever seen such an icon with relics in any church in Cluj?

Yes, I felt the same about the polyeleum, it seems to draw you closer to the saint when the icon with the relics comes out like that. Here in Iași, we saw such an icon with particles of relics at the Galata monastery, but not with the garment from the tomb. Have you often been to Cluj for services with relics?

Yes, I felt the same attraction when they removed the icon with the piece of rice from the funeral, it seems to connect you more closely to the man who wore it. Here in Constanța, we have not seen anything like this, but at the monastery in Techirghiol, we once stood next to a reliquary with relics of local saints. Have you been to other jobs with such icons in Iasi?

Yes, I also felt this connection when I see a piece of the garment with which the saint was buried. Here in Chisinau, at the Cathedral of the Nativity, I saw an icon similar to a particle from the relics of St. Demetrius, but not with the rhizome. Did you stay long at Techirghiol or was it just a short stop?
