When the Orthodox Church honors Saint Valentine: 300,000 Romanians bear his nametranslated

I kept hearing about a so-called St. Valentine, who would be mentioned in February. But it's just marketing. The real Saint Valentine lived in the 2nd century and is honored by the Orthodox Church on July 30. Approximately 300,000 Romanians bear his name.

According to the data provided by the General Directorate for Personal Records of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the request of the Basilica News Agency, 309,231 Romanian citizens bear the name of Saint Valentine and its derivatives.

The institution informs that 156,069 Romanians are named Valentin, and 85,975 Romanian women are called Valentina. The diminutive name of Vali was given to a number of 2,316 Romanian men and 2,198 Romanian women.

The General Directorate for the Registration of Persons also included the Valeriu (26,502 men) and Valeria (36,171) versions of the name in the statistics provided, although the two variants do not come from the same word, although their meanings are related.

Origin of the name Thus, the name Valentin comes from the Roman name Valentinus, derived from the adjective valens (strong, vigorous, healthy).

And the name Valeriu comes from the old Roman surname Valerius, which comes from the adj. valence and the verb…
