Last Sunday, the bust of Ion Pelivan, creator of the Union of Bessarabia with Romania, was unveiled in the Unirii Park in the Tomești commune of Ieși. The town is twinned with the Bessarabian city of Ialoveni from the statesman's native land, Moldova 1 reports.

"I have always consulted with the historians and at your proposal, Ion Pelivan came out with the most votes. I am glad, because today is a cross-border event, I could say, and we are cementing the brotherhood between us and the brothers across the Prut", declared Ștefan Timofte, the mayor of Tomești commune.

"We are honored by this important event for the Republic of Moldova and especially for Ialoveni, because you are one of the thirteen representatives of the Council of the Country", emphasized Sergiu Armașu, the mayor of Ialoveni.

Promoter of identity values Ion Gheorghe Pelivan was born on April 1, 1876 in the village of Răzeni, today located in the Ialoveni district.

An important political personality, he led a feverish activity against the Russification of Bessarabia by the tsarist empire. During his student years, he was arrested and imprisoned, because he founded an association of Bessarabian students.…
