British Museum: ‘Our willingness for an agreement remains unchanged on the Parthenon Sculptures’

The British Museum’s position and its willingness to reach an agreement on the Parthenon Sculptures remain unchanged, a museum spokesperson told ANA-MPA in response to a relevant query.

Specifically, when asked whether the British Museum shares the assessment in a Daily Telegraph article, stating that talks between the Greek side and the museum on the matter have essentially reached an impasse, and what stage the negotiations with the Greek side are currently at, the museum spokesperson stressed to ANA-MPA: “The museum’s position and its willingness to reach an agreement remain unchanged.”

Furthermore, the spokesperson referred to recent statements made to the Financial Times by the museum’s director Nicholas Cullinan, who, referring to the agreement on the loan of the Bayeux Tapestry to Britain, said that this specific agreement could offer “a glimmer of hope” for progress on the issue of the Sculptures as well.

“I would hope that there could be some tangible progress. That would be wonderful,” he had characteristically stated.
