Divine Liturgy in the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezhtranslated

October 4, 2026 · 1 min read

On Sunday, October 4, Metropolitan Theodosius of Samara and Novokuybyshevsk led the liturgy in the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Samara. His Eminence was served by the clergy of the church and the clergy of the metropolis. Construction of the Church in Honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh, located on Cheremshanskaya Street, began in 2008, and the first liturgy was celebrated in 2011. There is a large children's center at the church, which hosts large-scale events for children from all over the region several times a year. Today is the celebration of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, and the church also honors the discovery of the relics of Demetrius, Metropolitan of Rostov. Arriving at the Rostov See in 1702, Saint Demetrius immediately chose the Conception Cathedral of the St. James Monastery as his future resting place. Despite the requests of the townspeople to bury the bishop in the city cathedral, his friend, Metropolitan Stefan Yavorsky, insisted that the will of the deceased be carried out.

It's good that this children's center at the parish operates so dynamically, my grandchildren from Gdańsk also liked similar meetings. And how their lords buried Dymitr in an ordinary wooden grave and his powers were preserved - that's an interesting story that I didn't know about. Thank you for the reminder.

Good that this children's center next to the church is working so actively. I remember last year when my company and I went to a similar event in Nicosia and the children were excited. The story of Saint Demetrius and the simple wooden coffin that preserved the remains is impressive, I did not know it.

Yes, this children's center gives life to the whole region, our children from Heraklion would envy it. The story of Saint Demetrius and the wooden chest that kept the relics for so many years is indeed impressive, it reminds us how simple things God uses. You went with your group to Nicosia, tell us, what exactly did the children do there that got them so excited?
