This reminds me of how my grandmother from Sibiu kept a small piece of holy wood from Jerusalem in a silver box and told us the story of Saint Helena every September 14. 1700 years though... it seems so close when you read it.

My mother-in-law from Košice has a similar small cross that her husband brought back from a trip to Jerusalem twenty years ago. She keeps it in a little box on the nightstand and always shows it to us on September 14th. It is truly incredible that it has been seventeen hundred years since then, considering that this story is still being passed down in families.

My grandmother from the Rhineland also had a small piece of the Cross in an old wooden box. She would always take it out on September 14 and told us the story of Saint Helena. Really, 1700 years don't seem that far away when you have something like this at home.
