Bishop Ioan Casian: Diocese of Canada Congress seeks God’s will for Church and communities

“This is not merely an administrative meeting or an occasion to present activity reports, but a moment of ecclesial responsibility, in which we seek together to discern God’s will for the life of the Church and for the communities we serve,” said Bishop Ioan Casian of Canada at the Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada .

The bishop said the gathering was a time for reflection, evaluation and shaping the diocese’s future mission.

“The verse chosen as the theme of our reflection – ‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away; behold, all things have become new’ (2 Corinthians) – expresses the very essence of the Christian life,” His Grace added.

“The Apostle Paul is not speaking simply about a change of behaviour or an external reform, but about the ontological transformation of the human person through an encounter with Christ crucified and risen.”

El tema de la “nueva creación” me hizo pensar en lo que vivo cada domingo en misa: uno llega cansado de la semana y sale con ganas de empezar de nuevo. Me gustó que el obispo lo explicara como un cambio profundo, no solo de comportamiento. Ojalá en nuestra parroquia también hagamos ese discernimiento juntos.

Цікаво, що вони взяли саме цей вірш з 2 Корінтян. У нас на парафії після Великодня теж часто згадують про «нову тварь», але я раніше думала, що це більше про те, щоб не грішити. А тут чітко сказали — це онтологічна зміна через зустріч з Христом. Добре, що такі конгреси не зводяться до звітів.

Kod nas u Crnoj Gori poslije Vaskrsa sveštenik često citira baš taj stih iz 2. Korinćanima, ali mi je drago što je vladika jasno rekao da nije samo o tome da se manje griješi, nego o pravoj promjeni u dubini. To me podsjetilo na jednog brata iz parohije koji je poslije ispovijesti rekao da se osjeća kao da je ponovo rođen. Hvala što ste prenijeli ovaj događaj iz Kanade.

That verse from 2 Corinthians hit home. After choir practice on Wednesdays I often feel worn out from the week, yet the bishop’s point about real ontological change through Christ, not just trying to sin less, makes sense of why I keep showing up. Our little Ottawa parish could use a reminder like that too.

After a long day in the garden pulling weeds, showing up at church on Sunday really does feel like the old stuff passes away and everything starts fresh. Makes me wonder how the small scattered parishes up in Canada live that out when folks only see each other once a month.

Το θέμα με τη «νέα κτίση» και την οντολογική αλλαγή που είπε ο επίσκοπος μου έμεινε κι εμένα. Εδώ στην Πάτρα, μετά την Κυριακή, όταν κάθομαι στο σκακιέρι με τον Γιώργο, νιώθω ότι ακόμα και τα λάθη που έκανα τη βδομάδα φαίνονται πιο εύκολα να τα διορθώσω. Sí, Sofía, ese “cambio ontológico” que menciona el obispo es lo que noto cuando vuelvo a casa después de la misa y, de repente, hasta hornear un pastel para el domingo se siente distinto, como si todo empezara de nuevo de verdad. En nuestra parroquia todavía no lo hemos tratado en grupo, pero ojalá lo hagamos pronto. ¿Tú crees que bastaría con una charla después de la liturgia o habría que organizar algo más formal?

Da, versetul ăla cu „noua creație” chiar te face să vezi lucrurile altfel, inclusiv betonul de pe șantier. La parohiile mici din Canada cred că se simte mai ales în felul în care oamenii vin la slujbă după distanțe lungi – parcă oboseala se transformă în ceva care ține comunitatea unită. Tu ai fost vreodată la una din ele?

Da, Ion, versetul ăla cu noua creație chiar schimbă perspectiva, mai ales când vezi cum se adună lumea la slujbă după atâta drum. La parohiile mici din Canada, cred că se vede cel mai clar în felul cum preotul și enoriașii împart pâinea după Liturghie, nu doar ca ritual, ci ca legătură reală. Tu crezi că ar ajuta mai mult dacă ar organiza mai des întâlniri simple, acasă la cineva, în loc de doar duminica la biserică?

Da, versetul ăla cu „noua creație” chiar schimbă perspectiva, mai ales când vezi cum oamenii din parohiile mici ale Canadei bat zeci de kilometri ca să ajungă la slujbă. Am fost o dată la una lângă Montreal acum câțiva ani, la o liturghie de duminică, și mi-a rămas în minte liniștea aia din bisericuță după ce se termina. Tu ce parohie ai vizitat acolo?
