Bucharest churches do not forget the saint who saved the capital from epidemics: the program of the celebration of St. Visariontranslated

September 11, 2026 · 1 min read

Several churches in Bucharest are preparing for the feast of Saint Hierarch Visarion, the Archbishop of Larisa, who saved the Capital from plague epidemics in the 18th century.

Saint Visarion is honored on September 15, immediately after the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Among the places of worship in Bucharest that have him as their main or secondary patron are the "St. Spiridon" - New Metropolitan Cathedral, the "St. Visarion" Church from Piața Romană and the Măgureanu Monastery.

At the mentioned churches, on Monday evening, from 18:00, the Vespers service with Litia will be celebrated, and on Tuesday morning, there will be the Akathist of Saint Visarion and the Holy Liturgy, starting at 08:00.

Saint Visarion is also the patron of the historic Chapel of the Antim Monastery, which recently received the patron saint of Saint Sofian from Antim.

Saint Visarion He was born in 1490 in the village of Pili in Central Greece. At only 16 years old, when he entered monasticism, the young Visarion led a life crowned with the virtues of humility and obedience, spending his life in vigil, fasting and prayer. In 1527 he was elected Metropolitan of Larisa, pastoring until 1540, when he passed to the Lord.
