Su Eminencia, el Metropolitano Apostolos de Nueva Jersey, nació como Evangelos Koufallakis en la isla de Rodas, Grecia. Es el segundo de cuatro hijos de Ioannis y Stergia Koufallakis. Completó su educación primaria en la isla de Rodas. En 1990, fue aceptado en la histórica Escuela Eclesiástica de Patmos, también conocida como Patmeada, donde conoció por primera vez y luego dominó la música e himnología bizantina ortodoxa.

El 29 de abril de 1993, Evangelos fue tonsurado monje en el Santo y Sagrado Monasterio de Panagia Paramethea, momento en el que recibió el nombre de “Apostolos”. I didn't know he was from Rhodes and studied Byzantine music at Patmos—that explains a lot about how well our services have been chanted since he came.
