As red flags rise over the Sudanese city El-Obeid, bishop reiterates call for peace

As the world sounds the alarm, raises red flags, and sends a warning on possible paramilitary atrocities in the Sudanese city of El-Obeid, a local bishop reiterated the call for peace, amidst increasing drone strikes, artillery shelling, and ground attacks.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and its allies are proliferating strikes on the strategic city of 500,000 people, hitting schools, markets, and fuel stations as well as transport routes and vehicles. At least 27 drone attacks hit the city in June, according to agencies, marking the highest monthly total so far.

Anglican Bishop Ismael Gabriel Abudigin of El-Obeid Diocese said the strikes were killing civilians and causing great fear, while destroying civilian facilities such as fuel stations.

“ It is our prayer that this war stops,” said Abudigin, as the attacks caused major power blackouts and severe shortages of water, food, and fuel.

27 drone strikes in MA in June is a truly terrifying number. Bishop Abudigin rightly says that when schools and markets are bombed, people are simply living in fear. May God at least settle this war so that they still have water and food.

The drone strikes on the fuel stations are what worry me most for El-Obeid right now; without them the water pumps don’t work and the blackouts just get worse. Bishop Abudigin’s call to stop the war feels very grounded after seeing the same pattern start in El-Fasher. I’ll keep the families there in my prayers too.
