L'Église chrétienne orthodoxe est née à la Pentecôte en 33 après JC, avec l'effusion du Saint-Esprit sur les apôtres (voir Actes 2 : 2-4). Grâce aux travaux missionnaires et au témoignage martyr d'innombrables hommes et femmes, et à travers la transmission ininterrompue de la pure foi apostolique, elle s'est répandue dans tous les coins du monde : d'abord au Proche-Orient, puis en Europe, en Afrique et en Asie. L’orthodoxie a été implantée en Amérique du Nord à la fin du XVIIIe siècle par des missionnaires monastiques venus de Russie. Aujourd’hui, l’Église orthodoxe mondiale compte plus de 225 millions de membres. Chaque Église nationale (russe, grecque, serbe, etc.) est indépendante et auto-administrée, mais est unie dans la foi et dans les sacrements avec toutes les autres. Quelque cinq millions d’orthodoxes issus de diverses origines ethniques vivent désormais aux États-Unis et au Canada.

That quote from Abba Evagrius hit me right away — I keep trying to read the lives of the saints with the girls before bed, but half the time my mind is still stuck on tax deadlines. Good reminder that the faith really did travel from Pentecost all the way to those Russian monks landing in Alaska. Makes our little parish feel less random.

That Evagrius quote is spot on. I try to read a bit of the saints after my shift at the shop but my head's usually full of stock lists and whether I remembered to buy eggs for tomorrow's bake. Nice to be reminded the same faith that started at Pentecost reached those Russian monks who brought it here.

That Evagrius quote is exactly why I switched our bedtime reading to just one short life a night instead of pushing through when my head’s still replaying the shop’s inventory mess. The Alaska monks part always makes me smile too; it’s wild how a handful of Russians rowing up to Kodiak in 1794 turned into our little OCA parish here in Chicago.
