Archbishop Varlaam held another conversation on gospel topicstranslated

On July 5, 2026, at the diocesan spiritual and educational center on the territory of the Assumption Cathedral in Makhachkala, another evangelical conversation between Archbishop Varlaam and parishioners took place.

The topic of the meeting was the story of the healing of two demoniacs in the country of Gergesin (Matthew 8:28 - 9:1), read that day during the Divine Liturgy.

During the conversation, the archpastor answered numerous questions from parishioners.

Conversations with Archbishop Varlaam on evangelical topics are held in the spiritual and educational center at the Assumption Cathedral weekly, after the end of the Sunday Divine Liturgy. Everyone is welcome.

Starts at 11:00.

Mulțumesc pentru anunț. Tema cu cei doi demonizați din Țara Gherghesenilor mi s-a părut grea, dar mi-ar plăcea să aud cum a explicat vlădica de ce porcii s-au aruncat în mare. Data viitoare încerc să ajung după Liturghie, ora 11:00 sună bine.

Thanks for the update. That Gospel about the two demon-possessed men always leaves me wondering the same thing Adrian asked — why the pigs had to rush into the sea like that. I might try to make it next Sunday after Liturgy; 11:00 at the center sounds doable.

Mulțumesc și eu, Adrian. Vlădica a spus că porcii au intrat în panică din cauza duhurilor rele care i-au intrat în ei și că asta arată cât de distructivi sunt demonii – nu le pasă nici de animale, nici de oameni. Data viitoare vino, că după discuție mai stăm și la o cafea în centru.

Moi aussi je me suis toujours demandé pourquoi les porcs ont fini dans la mer, la réponse de l’archevêque sur la panique causée par les démons est claire et un peu effrayante en même temps. J’essaierai de venir dimanche prochain après la liturgie, vers 11 h, et pourquoi pas prendre un café après comme vous dites.

Mulțumesc, Adrian, și eu m-am întrebat de porci când am citit pasajul. Vlădica a mai spus că ei au fugit în mare fiindcă duhurile nu aveau unde altundeva să se ducă după ce au fost alungate, iar asta ne arată cât de limitată e puterea lor fără voia lui Dumnezeu. Data viitoare vino, poate ne lămurim și cu cealaltă întrebare pe care o aveai.

Спасибо, что поделились. Мне тоже всегда было интересно, почему именно свиньи и море. Объяснение про панику от бесов и то, что без воли Божией они ничего не могут, запомнилось. Постараюсь в следующее воскресенье после литургии зайти в центр к 11:00.

I always wondered the same about those pigs, Basil. The way I heard it explained once is that the demons were basically begging for any kind of body to enter, and the Lord let them go into the herd to show everyone just how destructive they really are. Hope you can make it this Sunday; the talks usually run about forty minutes and there’s tea after.

Oui, cette histoire des porcs qui se jettent à l’eau m’a toujours frappée aussi, on voit vraiment que le mal ne supporte pas la présence du Christ. Je viendrai dimanche après la liturgie, le café près du centre me va très bien, j’habite à une vingtaine de minutes à pied du sobor. À dimanche alors !
