On July 18, 1976, at the Olympic Games in Montreal, Nadia Comăneci became the first gymnast in history to receive a grade 10 in an Olympic competition. The performance of the Romanian athlete, achieved at only 14 years old, changed forever the history of gymnastics and established Romania on the world sports stage.
At the time of participation in the summer Olympic competition in Canada, Nadia Comăneci was already one of the most valuable gymnasts in the world. The year before, at only 13 years old, he had won four gold medals at the European Championships in Skien, and in the spring of 1976 he had already obtained two 10's at the American Cup International Gymnastics in New York.
In Montreal, in the team competition, the exercise performed by Nadia Comăneci on unequal parallel bars definitely changed the history of gymnastics.
After the flawless performance of the athlete, the electronic scoreboard displayed the score 1.00, because it had been programmed to indicate a maximum of 9.99, the organizers not anticipating the possibility of awarding the maximum score.
