An Introduction to the Revered Extra-Canonical Christian Texts of the Ancient Church

The formation of the New Testament canon was one of the most significant processes in the history of the Church. Through this process, the Christian community recognized which books expressed its faith, worship, and experience of salvation in Christ in an authentic and Apostolic manner. However, the fact that certain works were not included in the canon does not mean that all of them were regarded as heretical, dangerous, or worthless. On the contrary, several extra-canonical Christian texts were read with respect, copied, translated, and came to influence ecclesiastical life in a profound way.

The ancient Church was familiar with a rich body of literature: catechetical manuals, letters, apocalyptic writings, pious narratives, acts of martyrs, and accounts concerning figures associated with Christ and the Apostles. Some of these works were especially beloved by the faithful because they answered questions that the canonical books did not develop in detail. Some served the purpose of catechesis, others contributed to spiritual edification, while certain texts provided material that later influenced iconography, hymnography, and even the formation of ecclesiastical feasts.
