Alternative for Germany wins the elections in Saxony-Anhalt. Exit polls show that the majority of the party lacks one to three mandatestranslated

In the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, elections to the local parliament - the Landtag - have ended. Their main intrigue remains the result that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) will show. For the first time in its history, the far-right party has a high chance of winning more than half of the seats in the Landtag and forming a one-party government.

Voter turnout has increased markedly compared to previous elections in Saxony-Anhalt. Excluding postal voting, it was projected to exceed 76.5% versus 60.3% in 2021. Political scientist Alex Yusupov suggests that the final figure will be even higher than 80%.

The first exit polls—surveys of people leaving polling stations—show that the AfD has indeed achieved a landslide victory.

A study carried out by the public broadcasting network ARD shows that the Alternative for Germany received 44.5% of the vote (+23.7% on the 2021 result), the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) 18.5% (-18.6%), the Left 9.4% (-1.6%), the Greens 8.9% (+3%), the Social Democratic Party (SPD) - 8.2% (-0.2%), "Sarah Wagenknecht Union" - 5% (did not participate in the 2021 elections), Free Democratic Party (SDP) - 2.1% (-4.3%), others - 3.4% (-7%).
