Orthodox calendar, August 16 The Holy Shroud of the Savior Jesus Christ The Holy Shroud of the Savior Jesus Christ is honored every year on August 16 in the Romanian Orthodox Church. According to Tradition, the cloth was given by Jesus Christ to King Abgar of Edessa to be cured of leprosy. The face of the Savior was imprinted on the mahram, which, over time, was a model for iconographers.

It is the oldest representation of the Savior's face. The Holy Shroud of the Lord was preserved in Edessa, in the city's Cathedral. In 944, it was moved to Constantinople, and in 1204 the knights of the Fourth Crusade took it and carried it to the West. She burned in Paris during the French Revolution.
