Saint Andrew the Apostle is considered the Protector of Romania because he preached the Christian teaching to the Scythians and Thracians, on the current territory of our country.
In 1995, the Holy Synod decided to enter his feast with a red cross in the calendar. In February 1997, he proclaimed Saint Andrew the Apostle as "Patron of Romania", and in 2002 he decided that his celebration would become a "National Church Holiday".
In 2012, the Romanian Parliament declared the day of commemoration of Saint Andrew the Apostle - November 30, as a "legal holiday". The fact that the new Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation bears the patron saint of Saint Andrew the Apostle, the Protector of Romania, is also a sign of Romanians' reverence for Saint Andrew the Apostle, in addition to the patron saint of the Ascension of the Lord, which is also Romanian Heroes' Day.
