What will this bring for communion in the Anglican Communion? Standing Committee elections are always important, I hope at least something will remain stable.
D
Dušan Stanković
I hope that the new members will at least preserve some of the old ties between the provinces, because lately there is more and more division on the issue of morality. Milica, have you followed who exactly was chosen from Africa?
D
Dušan Marković
I hope that the new members will at least keep some connection with the traditional views, because lately a lot has changed in the matter of marriage and morality. Milica, do you think that these elections will affect the relations with the Global South or will everything remain in words?
M
Marija Lukić
Dusan, I agree that it would be good for new members not to give up the traditional teaching on marriage, because that is what holds the Church together. I think it will affect relations with the Global South only if we stop with empty promises and start with real respect for their views. And you, what do you think it should look like in practice?
S
Sofija Ristić
Maria, I agree that respect for the views of the Global South must be real, not just on paper. In practice, this would mean that topics that clearly divide them are not pushed at the gatherings, but that what the bishops from Africa and Asia have to say is listened to more. And what do you think, should the influence of Western delegates in the committees be reduced?
S
Sofija Kostić
I agree Maria, listening to bishops from Africa and Asia would really change things instead of always imposing topics from Europe and America. But I'm not sure that reducing the influence of Western delegates on the committees would help - they still bring in the most money for missions and projects. What specifically would you suggest instead?
M
Marko Lukić
Sophia, I agree that money from western churches helps many projects, but it often comes with conditions that change priority. Instead of reducing influence, it would be better if the voices of Africa and Asia were heard more strongly in the budget itself - that they decide where that money goes. Do you think that would change things?
D
Dušan Obradović
I agree, Marko, that African and Asian voices should have a stronger say on the budget, and not just appear at the end. I have seen how in some projects in Uganda the priority is shifted from building wells to "gender equality" just to get the money from England. Do you think that would require a change in the ACC statute or can it be handled within the existing rules?
M
Miloš Marković
I think it could be solved within the existing rules, if only Africans and Asians would be more persistent in the budget committee meetings themselves. In Uganda, I heard a similar story from a priest - the well was planned, and in the end they got a workshop on "gender equality". Did you see if the Ugandans complained officially to the ACC or just among themselves?
