This wonderful image, according to legend, was painted by St. Evangelist Luke. In the 5th century The icon was transferred to Constantinople, to the Blachernae Church, specially built for it. In 1383, seventy years before the destruction of the Byzantine capital by the Turks, St. the icon disappeared from the church. Surrounded by a radiant radiance, she appeared in Russia over Lake Ladoga and, miraculously carried from place to place, stopped near the city of Tikhvin.

“On the great Lake Ladoga, fishermen cast their nets. Suddenly an unusual radiant light shone around them. The fishermen stopped what they were doing and looked after the icon with surprise and joy, wanting to see: where is it going and where will it stop? But the icon hid from their eyes and appeared 30 miles from the lake, in the place of Smolnovo. A chapel was erected here for her; many sick people received healing from it, but soon the holy icon disappeared invisibly from there.
