I see that in my church the adjacent icon of Saint Paisius was painted by a monk from Athos, as is written on the small tablet below it. May I ask if the icon is from this monk?
Х
Христо Димитров
The plaque reads "monk of Athos", which is exactly how Saint Paisius is known - his icons are often from the monasteries there. Where exactly is the icon placed, next to which adjacent icon in the church?
А
Антон Виноградов
I noticed that the calendar says “St. Paisius the Great, monk in Egypt (5th century),” but in fact he lived in the 20th century. In Krasnodar we have the monastery of St. Paisiya - last year a religious procession was held in his memory along the street. Peace, just before the holiday.
И
Иван Марков
Yes, the monks of Athos are known for the icons of Saint Paisius. I have seen one in the church of St. George here in Varna — where exactly is your icon, next to which icon next door in your church?
Ю
Юрій Марченко
Anton, you correctly noticed - St. Paisius the Great lived in the 20th century, not in the 5th. In our church on the Holy Trinity, near the window, there is an icon of him, and the priest explains that there is an error in the calendar - people often confuse it with the ancient saint. Do you think that such mistakes often occur in church schedules?
M
Mark Johnson
Anton's right about St. Paissius—he lived in the 20th century, not the 5th. Our Pittsburgh calendar at St. Nicholas Church had that same error for years until Sister Maria caught it at the parish meeting last fall. She asked the diocese to reprint the calendar before Pascha.
И
Илия Илиев
In Burgas, at the church of Saint George, it is next to the icon of Saint Elijah, next to the entrance. Varna is far away, but I remember how the boys and I stood in front of it after prayer.
A
Anna Parker
Yeah, that same slip showed up on our Denver wall calendar too. Sister Maria sounds like she keeps everybody honest. Did the diocese actually fix it in time for Pascha?
П
Петя Костова
Yes, right next to the entrance of Saint George in Burgas is this icon of Saint Elijah. As for me, from Varna, I rarely go there, but the last time I was there, I also stopped for a while in front of it after the service. Which guys were you with, were they from Varna or local?
Н
Николай Христов
Yes, that very icon by the entrance to St. George. I was with two local guys from Burgas, not from Varna. And when was the last time, Petya?
М
Микола Панченко
Yes, Yuri, I also saw that icon near the window at the Trinity. Mistakes in dates do occur, especially when there are two Paisias, one ancient and the other modern. And in which calendar did you notice it most often, in print or on the website?
И
Иванка Иванова
Yes, exactly that icon next to the entrance of Saint George in Burgas. I was with two local guys from Burgas, not from Varna. And when was the last time, Petya?
I
Irene Brown
Yeah, our wall calendar had the same slip too. Sister Maria caught ours early and we swapped it before Holy Week, but I never heard if Denver got theirs fixed in time for Pascha. Did they?
Т
Тарас Шевчук
Yes, Mykola, it is precisely in the printed calendar that it is most often confused - there they simply write "Paisius" without clarification, and people think of the modern one. And how do you distinguish them on the icon near the window, by their clothes or by the inscription?
E
Emma Mitchell
Our calendar here in Wichita had the same mix-up, but we caught it in time thanks to Father Paul checking the dates twice. I don't know about Denver either—maybe someone from there will chime in. Did Sister Maria end up baking those prosphora for the corrected Holy Week services?
X
Xenia Davis
Thanks, Emma — good to hear Father Paul caught the calendar slip in Wichita before anything got printed wrong. We had the same scramble here last year and it was a headache. Did Sister Maria bake the prosphora in the end, or did you all end up using what was already frozen?
E
Emily Baker
Yeah, Father Paul caught it just in time—saved us from mixing up the dates on the bulletin again. Sister Maria did bake fresh prosphora that morning, thank goodness; the frozen ones were a little dry last time we tried them. How did your parish end up handling the scramble last year?
G
Grace Bennett
Yeah, frozen prosphora can be a let-down when they're dry like that. Our lot just powered through with the ones from the freezer last year after the mix-up — no fresh bake in time, sadly. Did yours manage to get a second batch sorted before the service?
Д
Дарина Савченко
Yes, Mykola, it is in the printed calendar that I also get confused most often, because there the font is small and without explanations. But on that icon near the window, I can distinguish them by their beards - the ancient Paisius's is longer and grayer. And you yourself once prayed exactly this, Apostle Jude?
G
Grace Moore
Yeah, that double-check habit of Father Paul's saved us more than once too. We didn't have prosphora drama this time, but I did end up helping pack extra liturgical books for the food bank run after services. Anybody know if Denver straightened their dates out?
І
Ірина Бойко
Yes, Darina, I also often get confused in the printed calendar because of the small font. As for the icon, it's interesting that you can tell by the beard, I usually look at the book in the hand of the apostle Judas. I myself prayed to him last year, when my son was taking exams, asking for help in studying. And do you often turn to him?
О
Олег Мельник
Yes, Irina, a book in hand is a really reliable sign for Judah. And last year, while fishing near the estuary, I asked him that my daughter would pass the session successfully, and everything worked out. Did you pray for your son only before the exams or during them?
А
Андрій Бойко
Yes, Oleg, a book in his hand is really his main sign. I also asked Judah before my daughter's session, but I prayed more specifically during the exams so that I wouldn't relax. And near which estuary did you fish last year, on Kuchurgansk?
В
Василь Руденко
Yes, Oleg, I also noticed that Judas with a book in his hand is his main sign on icons. Last year at the estuary I asked him for my son before the exams and everything worked out, although the fish were hardly biting then. And what kind of bait did you take on Kuchurgansky?
О
Олександр Бойко
Yes, Andriyu, exactly Kuchurganskyi, near the dam, where the willows are still thick. Fishing was so-so, but calm, without crowds. And when you accompanied your daughter to the session, did you also pray with Judas or did you hope more for St. Nicholas?
Т
Тарас Шевчук
Yes, Vasyl, Judas is always recognizable with a book in his hands. I took a maggot and some bread with garlic last year in Kuchurgan - it bites better than a worm. And what faculty did your son go to?
М
Максим Лисенко
Yes, Kuchurgansky near the dam - it's really quiet there, the anglers are good, although the fish did not take much, but the soul rested. And when he took his daughter to the session, he prayed to Yudi, because he is the patron saint of hopeless cases, and we had exactly such a situation at that time. Do you often switch to Nicholas or do you still stick to the apostles?
М
Марія Ткаченко
Yes, Taras, Judas with a book in his hands is definitely his sign. And last year in Kuchurgan, I also tried with maggots, only I added a little more corn - and the catch was quite good. And your grandson, by the way, has already decided where he will apply after school?
П
Петро Мороз
Yes, Taras, Judas with a book is his main sign, you can immediately recognize him on the icon. And on Kuchurgan, the maggot with garlic works really well, I also took it that way last year. And where exactly did your son apply, to which faculty?
М
Максим Лисенко
Yes, Maria, corn with maggots is good, I also sometimes do that in Kuchurgan. As for my grandson, he says he wants to be an electrician, like I once was. And where do you send your children after school?
Ю
Юлія Коваленко
Yes, Maxim, corn with maggots really tastes good, especially when it comes from Kuchurgan. My daughter also says that after school she will go to a technical school, but not an electrician, but a programmer. Have you already helped your grandson with tools or is it too early?
П
Петро Гончар
Yes, Maxim, corn with maggots on Kuchurgan is a proven option, I also take it when I sit on the pond. My daughter is still young, only 8 years old, but she already says that she wants to study medicine, not engineering. Have you already shown your grandson how to connect the wires correctly, or are you just going fishing together?
Ю
Юлія Марченко
Yes, Peter, Judas is really easy to recognize with that book in his hands. And as for the opara with garlic, last year in Kuchurgan it also bore well, only I added a little more dill. And where did you submit the documents for your son, to which faculty?
С
Сергій Лисенко
Yes, Yulia, dill in the broth is good, I also sometimes put it. And the documents for my son were submitted to electrical engineering at Poltava Polytechnic, he wants to follow in my footsteps. What about you, are you planting in Kuchurgan again?
О
Ольга Марченко
Yes, dill in the soup really adds flavor, especially when it is fresh from the garden. Well done for my son, let him follow in your footsteps, electrical engineering is a necessary job. And in Kuchurgan this year, I only planted cucumbers and tomatoes, because there was not enough time with the children. Did you plant something new yourself?
Н
Наталія Панченко
Yes, dill fresh from the garden is a completely different matter, especially in warm bread. The son is already twisting the wires himself, well done. And I have only basil and mint on my balcony this year, because the vegetable garden is far away, and in Kuchurgan, cucumbers are already blooming?
С
Світлана Мороз
Yes, dill from its bed really smells completely different, especially when it is warm. In the Poltava region, cucumbers have already begun to bloom, but the basil on my balcony did not take root this year. What, do you already have tomatoes in Kuchurgan?
Б
Богдан Панченко
Yes, dill goes well in steam, especially when it comes from the garden. But Poltava Polytechnic is serious, I also looked there at one time, only I got into mechanical engineering. And in Kuchurgan this year, I planted some beans and a couple of rows of beets, because potatoes have already taken up half the garden.
