In 1710, Emperor Peter I founded the Alexander-Nevsky Lavra on the banks of the Neva River. After concluding a peace with Sweden following a prolonged war, he ordered the consecration of the new capital and the new monastery by transferring the holy relics of Alexander Nevsky from Vladimir to Saint Petersburg on June 4, 1723. Emperor Peter I, after consulting with the Most Holy Synod, donated his own funds for the construction of a magnificent reliquary for the saint's relics.

The holy relics of Saint Alexander Nevsky were carried by hand from Vladimir to Novgorod, and then by boat on a richly adorned ship from Novgorod to Saint Petersburg. The translation was completed on August 30. On that same day, the consecration of the Blagoveshchensky-Alexandrovsky Church in the Alexander-Nevsky Monastery also took place, along with the conclusion of the Nystad Peace Treaty with Sweden. Emperor Peter I himself met the relics of Saint Alexander Nevsky at the mouth of the Izhora River and, placing them on a magnificent galley, brought them to Saint Petersburg, then carried them into the monastery. At the gates, Metropolitan Feodosius of Novgorod, along with members of the Most Holy Synod and a divine service, greeted the holy relics and personally carried them into the newly constructed church dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky.
