The list of saints for 12 July is a proper mixed bag — from early martyrs near Ancyre right through to St Theodore and his son John at Kiev. I didn't know there was a St Menou, bishop of Quimper; that's a new one for me. Interesting how the calendar jumps across centuries and countries like that.

Yeah, that jump from Persian martyrs to a Breton bishop always surprises me too. I looked up St Menou after seeing him last year — turns out there’s a little chapel named after him near Quimper that fishermen still visit. Ever come across any of his relics or local customs?

Yeah, that jump always gets me too. I remember reading that St Menou’s chapel is still a spot for local fishermen to light a candle before heading out — my mate from Brittany mentioned it last summer. Have you ever visited any of those old Breton saint sites yourself?

Yeah, my husband and I stopped by Saint Menou’s chapel a few years back on a family trip to Quimper. The fishermen still leave little votive candles and bits of net as offerings — it felt very grounded, not touristy at all. Have you been to any of the other Breton sites like Locronan?

Yeah, my brother-in-law from Nantes told me the same about those fishermen at St Menou’s chapel — they still tie a bit of net to the railing before they sail. Never made it to Brittany myself, but I did visit the old chapel of St Michel du Mont Malée in Greece a few years ago. Any other Breton spots your mate recommended?

Yeah, my family and I drove down to Quimper a couple of summers ago and lit a candle at St Menou’s chapel right before we hiked the coastal path — the bits of net on the railing were exactly as your mate described.
