I remember Father Ivan at St. Mary's in Sydney, who arrived from Russia in the 1890s and helped build our church. It’s interesting to see Carroll’s work in America mirrored here—just as he founded Georgetown, Father Ivan helped found our parish school.

Yes, that parallel with Father Ivan is striking—both men arrived in places where Catholics were still a small minority and just got on with building what was needed. Our own parish school at St. Mary’s opened in the early 1900s, a bit later than Georgetown but with the same idea of giving the next generation a solid start. Did Father Ivan bring any particular Russian customs or hymns that stuck around in the choir?
