Rising from sleep, I thank Thee, Holy Trinity, for for the sake of Thy goodness and long-suffering, Thou didst not become angry with me, lazy and sinful, nor did Thou destroy me with my iniquities; But you usually loved mankind and in the despair of the lying person you raised me up to practice and glorify Your power. And now enlighten my mental eyes, open my lips to learn Thy words, and to understand Thy commandments, and to do Thy will, and to sing to Thee in heartfelt confession, and to sing Thy all-holy name, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
As many because of Your goodness - for according to the multitude of Your goodness. Below you destroyed me - and did not put me to death (below ' - and not: the union of unions neither and the same). Usually - here: as always, as You constantly do. Failure is ignorance; despair. Surely so. Utrenovati - get up early, come, say morning prayer. Power - strength, power. The eyes of the mind are the eyes of the soul. Open - open. By Your word - here: teaching, Your word (not words). Confession is here: glory, praise, thanksgiving.
+ Sleep is an image of death. Having awakened from sleep, from sleepy oblivion and insensibility, we offer thanks to the Lord for the fact that He was not angry for our sins and gave us the life of a new day, that He raised us from our bed to practice and glorify Your power - so that in the morning we could glorify the power of God. This is why we get out of bed! The first concern is glorifying the name of God, pleasing God. But we can please God only by God’s grace - therefore, we ask the Lord to enlighten our mental eyes, we ask to open our mouths for teaching in the law of the Lord and understanding and fulfilling His commandments, in order to do His will in everything (many different prayers return us to the words of the Lord’s prayer - Thy will be done!), in order to sing praise to God in confession with our hearts not only now, at the appointed hour morning prayer, but also throughout the coming day, now and all the days of our life, and ever and ever - in the eternal Kingdom of God (Thy Kingdom come!).
* sing to You in heartfelt confession - in the Greek text of the prayer literally: to rattle Your glory in a grateful heart, that is, to glorify You in a grateful heart.
* you were not angry with me... below you destroyed me... you raised me up - forms of the past tense (in modern Russian we will say simply: you were not angry with me... you did not destroy me... These modern forms were formed from more complex Church Slavonic ones by the disappearance of the auxiliary verb thou). The Church Slavonic form, in contrast to the modern one, also shows which person the verb refers to: in modern Russian, I, and you, and he - came; in Church Slavonic I came (I), you came (you), I came (he).
Church Slavonic has a more complex tense system than modern Russian. The examples given refer to the so-called past perfect tense, or perfect (it tells about an unconditionally occurring event). Similar forms are found in many prayers, for example, in the following 50th Psalm: Thou hast loved the truth—Thou hast loved the truth. But there are other types of past tense; we will encounter them below.
