A certain man lived in the country of Ausitidia, his name was Job. And that man was blameless, righteous, true, fearing God, and shunned every evil deed. And he had seven sons and three daughters. And he had livestock: seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred pairs of oxen, five hundred grazing donkeys, and very many servants, and he had great business on the earth, and that man was the most noble of the inhabitants of the east of the sun. And his sons gathered together and held a feast every day, taking with them their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when the days of the feast were over, Job sent for them and purified them, rising in the morning: he offered sacrifices for them according to their number and one bull for sin for their souls, for Job said: “Perhaps my sons in their minds have thought evil against God.” Thus did Job do all their days. And it happened one day: and behold, the angels of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and the devil came with them. And the Lord said to the devil: “Where did you come from?” And the devil said in response to the Lord: “I have walked around the earth, and passed through the heavenly places, and behold, I stand.”
And the Lord said to him: “Have you paid attention to My servant Job? For there is no man like him on earth: blameless, righteous, true, fearing God, shunning every evil deed.” And the devil answered and said to the Lord: “Does Job honor God for nothing? Didn't You fence him from the outside, and the inside of his house, and even all his property on all sides? And You blessed the works of his hands and multiplied his livestock on the earth. But stretch out Your hand and touch everything that he has, and will he not bless You to your face?” Then the Lord said to the devil: “Behold, I give everything that he has into your hand, just don’t touch him.” And the devil went out from the presence of the Lord.
