Prokeimenon (Psalm 131), tone 6: Arise, O Lord, into Thy rest,/ Thou and the ark of Thy holiness.
Verse: Remember, Lord, David and all his meekness.
Prokeimenon (Psalm 131), tone 6: Rise, O Lord, to the place of Your rest - You and the ark of Your holiness!
Verse: Lord, remember David and all his meekness!
Reading of Exodus (Exodus 2:5–10).
Reader: The daughter of Pharaoh came down to go to the river, and her slaves passed by at the river. And seeing the ark in the light, he sent a slave and took it. And when he opened, he saw the child weeping in the ark, and he spared her the daughter of Pharaoh, and said, “This is from the children of the Hebrews.” And his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter: Do you want to call a Jewish nurse for a wife, and the child will be rewarded? And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her: Go. The maiden has gone and called the mother of the lads. The daughter of Pharaoh said to her: Observe this in your children, and repay it: I will give you a reward. So the boy took his wife and milked her. When she grew to manhood, he brought her to Pharaoh’s daughter. And she became a son: and he called his name Moses, saying, “Take him from the water.”
Reading Exodus [2:5–10]
Pharaoh's daughter went down to the river to bathe, and her maids went with her to the river; and she, seeing a papyrus basket in the floodplain of the river, sent a maid to pick it up. And, opening the basket, she saw a crying child in it. And Pharaoh’s daughter took pity on him and said, “He is one of the Hebrew babies.” And the baby’s sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter: “Do you want me to call a Hebrew nurse and she will nurse this child for you?” And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” And the girl went and called the mother of the child. The daughter of Pharaoh said to her: “Keep this child for me and feed him for me, and I will reward you.” And the woman took the child and nursed him. When the baby grew up, she brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he became like a son to her, and she named him Moses, saying: “I picked him up from the water.”
Prokeimenon (Psalm 132), tone 4: Behold what is good, or what is red,/ but even the brethren shall live together.
Verse: Like ointment on the head, coming down on the bard, the bard of Aaron.
Prokeimenon (Psalm 132), tone 4: Listen! what is good and joyful? Brothers live together.
Verse: It is like ointment that flows from the head onto the beard, onto Aaron’s beard.
Job reading (Job.1:13–22).
It came to pass that this day came to pass, and the sons and his daughters drank wine in the house of their eldest brother. And behold, the messenger came to Job, and said to him: Let the oxen and the donkeys graze near them. And the captive came and took them captive, and beat the youths with the sword, and I alone was saved and came to tell you. Again I say this, a messenger came and said to Job: fire fell from heaven and burned the sheep, and the shepherds ate likewise, but I alone was saved and came to tell you. Again I say this, a messenger came and said to Job: Having created three chiefs of cavalry, and having surrounded the lords and captive them, and having beaten the youths with swords, I alone was saved and came tell you. Again I say this, and a messenger came, saying to Job: As your son and your daughter eat and drink from their elder brother, suddenly a great wind came from the desert, and I touched the four corners of the church, and the church fell on your children, and died: but I alone was saved and came to tell you.
So (having heard) Job, having risen, tore his robe to pieces and shorn the hair of his head, (and sprinkled finger on his head,) and fell to the ground, bowed down to (the Lord) and said: he himself is naked I expired from my mother’s womb, naked, and I will go there: The Lord gave, the Lord took away: as the Lord willed, so it came to pass: Blessed be the name of the Lord (forever). In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned nothing before the Lord (below his lips), and he did not give madness to God.
Reading Job [1:13–22]
It happened one day: the sons of Job and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their elder brother. And so, a messenger came to Job and said to him: “Pairs of oxen were plowing, and donkeys were grazing near them, and robbers came and took them away, and struck the servants with the sword, and I alone escaped and came to tell you.” While he was still speaking, another messenger came to Job and said to him: “Fire fell from heaven to earth and consumed the sheep, and also burned the shepherds, and I alone was saved and came to tell you.” While this one was still speaking, another messenger came to Job and said to him: “The horsemen formed three detachments and surrounded the camels and took them, and killed the servants with the sword, and I alone escaped and came to tell you.” While this one was still speaking, another messenger came and said to Job: “While your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking with your son, their elder brother, suddenly a strong wind blew from the desert and enveloped the house from four corners, and the house fell on your children - and they died, and I alone was saved and came to tell you.”
Having heard this, Job stood up, tore his clothes, and shaved the hair on his head and sprinkled dust on his head, and falling to the ground, he worshiped the Lord and said: “I myself came naked from my mother’s womb, naked I will go there, the Lord gave, the Lord took away, as the Lord pleased, so it was, blessed be the name of the Lord forever.” In all these cases with him, Job did not sin in anything before the Lord, not even with his lips, and did not show madness towards God.
