In the same way the tree longs for the springs of water, my soul longs for You, O God. My soul thirsts for the mighty, living God: when will I come and appear to the face of God? My tears were bread to me day and night, and I was always told every day: “Where is your God?” I remembered this and poured out my soul on me, as if I would go to the place of the wondrous village, even to the house of God, in the voice of joy and confession of the noise of the celebration. How sorrowful are you, my soul? And do you confuse me? Trust in God, for we will confess to Him, the salvation of my face, and my God. To myself, my soul is troubled: for this reason I will remember You from the land of Jordan and Ermonim, from the small mountain. The abyss calls forth the abyss in the voice of Your abyss; all Your heights and Your waves have come upon me. In the day the Lord commands His mercy, and in the night His song is from me, a prayer to the God of my life. River to God: You are my protector, why have you forgotten me? And when I go around lamenting, the enemy sometimes insults me?

Always lament my bones, smite my reproach, always say to them to me every day: Where is your God? How sorrowful are you, my soul? And do you confuse me? Trust in God, for we will confess to Him, the salvation of my face, and my God. As a deer strives for springs of water, so my soul strives for You, O God! My soul thirsted for the Mighty, Living God: when will I come to His abode and stand before the face of God? My tears were my bread day and night, when they said to me every day, mocking: “Where is your God?” I remembered this and poured out my soul to myself: now I will go to the place of the wondrous monastery, to the very house of God, amid cries of joy and glorification, sounds of celebration! Why are you sad, my soul? And why are you embarrassing me? Trust in God, for I glorify Him: “In You is my salvation, You are my God!” My soul has fallen into confusion, and I remember You in the land of Jordan and Ermonim, on Mount Malaya. The abyss calls upon the abyss with the voice of Your abysses. Your high waters and Your waves have passed over me.

During the day the Lord will send His mercy to me, and at night my song will ascend to Him, a prayer to God, the Lord of my life. I will say to God: “You are my Protector, why have you forgotten me? And why do I go around complaining when the enemy insults me? When my bones shook, my enemies reviled me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?” Why are you sad, my soul? And why are you embarrassing me? Trust in God, for I glorify Him: “In You is my salvation, You are my God!”

Psalm 42

Psalm to David, not inscribed among the Jews.
Psalm of David, not inscribed among the Jews, 42.

Judge, O God, and judge my soul, from the unworthy tongue, from the unrighteous man, and deliver me from flattery. Are you, O God, my Fortress, have you rejected me so much? And when I go around lamenting, the enemy sometimes insults me? Send Your light and Your truth, she will guide me and lead me to Your holy mountain and to Your villages. And going down to the altar of God, to God who rejoices my youth, I will confess to You on the harp, O God, my God. How sorrowful are you, my soul? And do you confuse me? Trust in God, for we will confess to Him, the salvation of my face, and my God. Judge me, O God, and resolve my litigation; Deliver me from the wicked people, from the unrighteous and evil man! For You, O God, are my strength, why have You rejected me? And why do I go around complaining when the enemy insults me? Send me Your light and Your truth; They will guide me and lead me to Thy holy mountain and to Thy mansions. And I will go to the altar of God, to God, who rejoices in my youth, and I will glorify You on the harp, O God, my God! Why are you sad, my soul? And why are you embarrassing me?

Trust in God, for I glorify Him: “In You is my salvation, You are my God!”

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 43

In the end, sons of Kore, to reason.
In the end, the sons of Korah, for instruction, psalm, 43.

God gave us ears to hear, and our fathers made known to us the work which thou didst in their days, in the days of old. Your hand has consumed the tongues, and I have planted you, you have embittered people, and you have driven me out. It was not with our sword that we inherited the earth, and no arm of theirs saved them, but Thy right hand, and Thy arm, and the illumination of Thy face, for Thou didst delight in them. You are my King and my God, commanding the salvation of Jacob. Because of You we will tear our enemies by their horns, and because of Your name we will despise those who rise up against us. For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword will not save me. For thou hast saved us from those who afflict us, and thou hast put to shame those who hate us. Let us boast in God all day long and confess in Your name forever. Now you have rejected and put us to shame, and you will not go away, O God, in our strength. You brought us back in the presence of our enemies, and those who hated us plundered themselves. You gave us food like sheep, and you scattered us among the nations. Thou hast given Thy people without price, and there is not much in our shouting.

You have given us reproach from our neighbors, imitation and desecration of those around us. Thou hast made us a byword among the people, to bow the head among the people. All day long my shame is before me, and the coldness of my face covers me from the voice of reproach and slander, from the face of the enemy and expelling. All this has come upon us, and we have not forgotten You, nor have we failed in Your covenant. And do not our heart turn back, and you have turned our paths away from Your path. For Thou hast humbled us in the place of bitterness, and the shadow of death has been covered. Even if we forget the name of our God and if we lift up our hands to a foreign god. Will not God seek these? That is the secret news of the heart. For Your sake we are put to death all day long, counted as sheep of the slaughter. Arise, sleep well, Lord? Resurrect and do not completely deny. Do you turn away Your face? Do you forget our poverty and our sorrow? For our soul is humbled into the dust, our belly cleaves to the earth. Arise, Lord, help us and deliver us in Your name.

God, we have heard with our ears, and our fathers have told us the deed that You did in their days, the days of old. Thy hand has destroyed nations, and Thou hast rooted our fathers; Thou hast struck down the nations and driven them out! For our fathers did not acquire the land with their sword, nor did their arm save them, but Your right hand, and Your arm, and the brightness of Your face, for You favored them. You are my King and my God, granting salvation to Jacob! With You we will pierce our enemies as if with horns, and in Your name we will destroy those who rise up against us! For I trust not in my bow, and my sword will not save me; For You saved us from our persecutors and put our haters to shame. Let us praise God every day and glorify His name forever. But now You have rejected us and put us to shame, and You do not march, O God, at the head of our armies. You turned us back before our enemies, and our haters plundered our goods. You gave us like sheep to be eaten, and scattered us among the pagans. You have given up Your people as having no value, and there are already few of us who cry out to You. He gave us over to be reproached by our neighbors, to be ridiculed and mocked by those who live around us.

He has made us a byword among the pagans; the nations shake their heads at us. Every day my shame is before me, and shame is on my face From the voice of the offender and slanderer, from the speeches of the enemy and persecutor. All this befell us, but we did not forget You and did not break Your covenant. And our heart did not turn back, although You turned our paths away from Your path. For You humbled us where troubles befell us, and the shadow of death covered us. If we had forgotten the name of our God, if we had stretched out our hands to a foreign god, would not God have punished us for this? For He knows the secrets of the heart. But for our loyalty to You they kill us every day; for them we are like sheep given to the slaughter. Arise, why have you fallen asleep, O Lord? Rise up and do not reject us completely! Why do you turn away your face? Do you forget our poverty and our sorrow? For our soul is humbled to dust, and our body is thrown to the ground. Arise, Lord, help us and deliver us for the glory of Your name!

Psalm 44
