Thou hast inspired my prayer, and despise not my supplication. Hear me, and answer me: I have mourned with sorrow of heart, and from the voice of the adversary and from the vexation of sinners I have been grieved. For they have turned aside from me in lawlessness, and in wrath they have hated me. My heart is troubled within me, and fear of death has assailed me. Fear and trembling have come upon me, and darkness has covered me. And I said: Who shall give to me wings like a dove, and comfort and rest; all these have fled from me, running away, and I have been established in the wilderness.

I thirsted for Thee, Saviour, who deliverest me from faintness and from tempest. Thou hast drowned the waters, and divided their tongues, for I saw lawlessness and contradiction in the city. Day and night it shall be and on its walls: lawlessness and toil are in the midst of it, and unrighteousness; and there is no defence against the groaning thereof, wealth and guile. For though the enemy reproach me, I would endure for thy sake: and though the hater of me speak exceeding fair, I would uncover myself from him.

Thou art also, O my Lord, indifferent, and known to me; and on whom thou didst enjoy with me in a single mind, in the house of God. Let death come upon thee, and let the living descend into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, in the midst of them: I have cried to Thee, and Thou hast heard me.

Evening and morning and noon I shall proclaim, and make known, and hear the voice of my cry. Deliver my soul from those who draw near unto me: for many are with me. Hear, O God, and humblest thou him that was before the ages: for there is no change in them, for they have not feared God. Stretch forth thy hand to receive recompense, they have defiled the covenant thereof. They have separated from the wrath of Thy face, and have brought near their hearts: their words are softer than oil, yet are they sharp swords. Turn upon Thee sorrow, and it shall be poured out on them, not giving in the age everlasting to the righteous.

Thou art also, O God, hastenest thou down into a dungeon of weariness. Men of blood and guile shall not prolong their days: but I will hope on Thee.
