Grant me, O God, my prayer, and do not despise my supplication. Hearken to me, and answer me: I have mourned with sorrow of heart, and was troubled by the voice of the adversary and by the temptation of sinners. For they have turned away from me in lawlessness, and in wrath they have hated me. My heart is troubled within me, and fear of death has assailed me. Fear and trembling have come upon me, and darkness has covered me. And I said: Who will give to me wings like a dove, and comfort and rest; all these have fled from me, running away, and I have taken up my dwelling in the wilderness. I longed for God, the Saviour of my soul from weakness and from tempest. You flooded the waters, and divided their tongues, for I saw lawlessness and rebellion in the city. Day and night it will be present with me: lawlessness and toil are in its midst, and unrighteousness; and there is no escape from its distress, neither the reaping of evil nor deceit. For though my enemy reproached me, I would have endured for thy sake: and though my hater spoke proudly against me, I would have opened myself up to him. Thou, O Lord, art indifferent, my Master, known to me: with whom thou didst enjoy a flask of wine together in the house of God, walking in one mind. Let death come upon thee, and let the living go down into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their midst: I called to God, and he heard me. Evening and morning and noon I will proclaim, and the voice of my prayer will be heard. He will deliver my soul from those who draw near to me: for there were many with me. God hears, and will humble him, even before the ages; for they have not feared God. Stretch out thy hand for recompense, thou hast defiled his covenant. Thou hast separated thyself from the wrath of his face, and hast drawn near their hearts: their words are softer than oil, yet are they swords. Turn to the Lord in sorrow, and he will comfort thee, not giving the righteous man silence for ever. Thou, O God, hast brought down my soul into a pit of corruption. Men of blood and deceit shall not live out their days: but I trust in thee.
