Thou hast inspired my prayer, and despise not my supplication. Hear me, and answer me: I have mourned with sorrow of heart, and feared the voice of the adversary and the vexation of sinners. For they have turned away from me in lawlessness, and in wrath they have hated me. My heart is troubled within me, and fear of death has overtaken me. Fear and trembling have come upon me, and darkness covers me. And I said: Who will give me wings like a dove, and comfort and rest; all these have fled from me, running away, and I have taken up my abode in the wilderness. I longed for God, the Saviour of my soul from weakness and tempest. Thou didst drown the waters, and divide their tongues, for I saw lawlessness and rebellion in the city. Day and night it will dwell around His walls: lawlessness and toil are in its midst, and unrighteousness; and there is no defence against the groaning of its harvest and deceit. For though the enemy reproached me, I would have endured for Thee: and though the hater of me spoke with great loquacity against me, I would have opened my mouth from him. Thou, O Lord, art indifferent, my Master, known to me: and on whom didst Thou not enjoy a partnership in our laughter, walking together in one mind in Thy house? Let death come upon thee, and let the living go down into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their midst. I called to God, and He heard me. Evening and morning and noon I will proclaim, and announce, and His voice shall hear me. He will deliver my soul from those who draw near to me: for many were with me. He hears, and will humble him, the sinner before ever; for there is no change in them, for they have not feared God. Stretch forth Thy hand for recompense, Thou hast defiled His covenant. Divided thou art from the wrath of His face, and hast brought near their hearts: their words are softer than oil, yet are they sharp arrows. Turn to Thee, O Lord, in thy sorrow, and that one shall feed thee, not give voice for ever to the righteous. Thou, O Lord, hast brought me down into a dungeon, and my days are consumed with wormwood. Men of blood and deceit will not prolong their days: but I trust in Thee.
