Grant me, O God, my prayer, and do not despise my supplication. Hearken to me, and answer me: I have sorrowed with my soul, and was troubled from the voice of the adversary and from the heat of sinners. For they have turned away from me in lawlessness, and in wrath they have hated me. My heart is troubled within me, and fear of death has fallen upon me. Fear and trembling came to me, and darkness covered me. And I said: Who will give me wings like a dove, and comfort and rest; all have fled, running away, and I was established in the wilderness.
I thirsted for God, the Saviour of my soul from weakness and from tempest. Thou didst drown the ungodly with waters, and divided their tongues, for I saw lawlessness and contradiction in the city. Day and night it will dwell by its walls: lawlessness and toil are in the midst of it, and injustice: and there is no escape from the groans of it, wealth and guile. For though the enemy reproached me, I would have endured for thee: and though my hater spoke with great loquacity against me, I would have opened myself up to him. Thou, O my Lord, known to me, and indifferent man, who didst enjoy with me a flask of wine in God's house, walking together in one mind.
Let death come upon thee, and let the living go down into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, in the midst of them. I called to God, and He heard me. Evening and morning and noon I will proclaim, and the voice of my prayer shall be heard. My soul shall be delivered by peace from those who approach me: for many were with me. Hearkeneth God, and will humble him, he that was before time: for there is no change in them, for they have not feared God. Stretch forth thy hand to receive recompense, thou hast defiled the covenant of Him.
Divided thou art from the wrath of His face, and hast brought near their hearts: their words are softer than oil, yet are they sharp arrows. Turn upon the Lord thy sorrow, and it shall be for thee, not giving in the age of the righteous voice. Thou, O God, dost bring down to a lowly seat. Men of blood and guile shall not prolong their days: but I will hope on Thee.
