Thou hast inspired my prayer, and despise not my supplication. Hear me, and answer me: I have sorrowed with my soul, and feared the voice of the adversary and the heat of sinners. For they have turned aside from me in lawlessness, and in wrath they have fought against me. My heart is troubled within me, and fear of death has overtaken me. Fear and trembling came upon me, and darkness covered me. And I said: Who will give to me wings like a dove, and comfort and rest; all these have fled from me, running away, and I have been established in the wilderness.
I thirsted for God, the Saviour of my soul from weakness and tempest. Thou didst drown the ungodly with waters, and divided their tongues, for I saw lawlessness and contradiction in the city. Day and night it shall be and on its walls: lawlessness and toil are in its midst, and injustice; and there is no defence against its heaps of rapine and deceit. For though the enemy reproached me, I endured him; and though the hater of me spoke proudly, I hid myself from him.
Thou, O my Lord, known to me, and Thou who hast bought pleasure with me in the house of God, walking together in one mind. Let death come upon thee, and let the living descend into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, in their midst; but I called on God, and He heard me.
Evening and morning and noon I shall proclaim, and announce, and the voice of my prayer shall be heard. Thou shalt deliver my soul from those who draw near to me: for many were with me. God hears, and will humble him, even before the ages; for there is no change in them, for they have not feared God. Stretch forth Thy hand for recompense, they have defiled the covenant of Him. They have separated themselves from the wrath of His face, and have brought near their hearts: their words are sweeter than oil, but they are arrows. Turn to Thee, O Lord, thy sorrow, and it shall nourish thee, not give in the ageless voice a righteous man.
Thou, O God, hast brought down my soul into a pit of weariness. Men of blood and deceit will not have days of their own: but I trust in Thee.
