Thou hast inspired my prayer, and despise not my supplication. Hear me, and answer me: I have sorrowed with my soul, and was moved by the voice of the adversary and by the sting of sin. For they have turned away from me in lawlessness, and in wrath they have hated me. My heart is troubled within me, and fear of death has overtaken me. Fear and trembling came upon me, and darkness covered me. And I said: Who will give to me wings like a dove, and comfort and rest; all these have fled from me, running away, and I have taken up my dwelling in the wilderness. I longed for God, the Saviour of my soul from weakness and tempest. Thou didst drown the ungodly with waters, and divided their tongues, for I saw lawlessness and rebellion in the city. By day and by night it will be present to me: lawlessness and travail are in its midst, and injustice: and there is no defence against the groaning of its oppression and deceit. For though the enemy reproached me, I would have endured; and though my hater spoke proudly, I would have opened my mouth from him. Thou art indeed a stranger, O Lord, my known Master, in whom I rejoiced to drink with thee of the cup, walking together in one mind within thy house. But let death come upon thee, and let the living go down into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, in its midst: but I called upon God, and he heard me. Evening and morning and noon I will proclaim, and declare, and his ear shall hear my voice. He will deliver my soul from those who draw near to me: for many were with me. He hears, and will humble him, the sinner before ever; for there is no change in them, for they have not feared God. Stretch forth thy hand for recompense, thou hast defiled his covenant. Thou hast separated thyself from the wrath of his face, and brought near their hearts: their words are softer than oil, yet are they sharp. Turn to the Lord thy sorrow, and it shall be upon thee, not giving to the righteous in the age to come. Thou art indeed a stranger, O Lord, thou hast brought me down into the dust of death. Men of blood and deceit will not have days: but I trust in thee.
