Genesis reading. [Gen.7:11–24, 8:1–3]
It happened in the six hundredth summer in the life of Noah, the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, on that day all the springs of the deep were broken up, and the abysses of heaven opened up. And it rained on the earth for fourty days and fourty nights. On that day Noah, Shem, Ham, Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and his three sons’ wives went with him into the ark. And every beast of the earth according to its kind, and every livestock according to its kind, and every creeping thing that moves on the earth according to its kind, and every winged bird according to its kind: You came down to Noah into the ark. two, male and female, of all flesh, in which is the living spirit. And he that came in, male and female, of all flesh, came down into the ark unto Noah, as the Lord God commanded Noah: and the Lord God shut the ark from without. And there was a flood of fourty days, and fourty nights on the earth, and the waters multiplied, and the ark was taken, and was lifted up from the earth: And the waters were great, and they multiplied greatly on the earth, and were carried ark on top of the water.
And the waters were great upon the earth: and they covered all the high mountains, even as they were under heaven: Fifty lactes of grief the waters rose up, and covered all the high mountains. And all flesh that moves on the earth died, birds and cattle and wild beasts, and every creeping thing that moves on the earth, and every man. And all the trees have the breath of life, and yet they die. And every rising that was upon the face of the whole earth was consumed, from man, even to the cattle, and the creeping things, and the birds of the air, and was consumed from the earth: and Noah remained one, and those who were with him in ark. And the waters rose above the earth for a hundred and fifty days. And God will remember Noah, and all the beasts, and all the livestock, and all the birds, and every creeping thing that creeps, that are with him in the ark: and God bringeth the spirit upon the earth, and it ceased. water. And the fountains of the deep were closed, and the abysses of heaven were closed: and the rain was withheld from heaven. And the waters that came up from the earth receded, and the waters diminished after an hundred and fifty days.
Reading Genesis [7:11–24; 8:1–3]
In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the deep burst open and the windows of heaven were opened. And there was rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights. On that day Noah, Shem, Ham, Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife and his three sons' wives entered the ark with him. And every beast of the earth according to its kind, and every livestock according to its kind, and every creeping thing that moves on the earth according to its kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. They went into Noah's ark, two by two, of all flesh in which is the spirit of life. And those who entered, male and female of all flesh, went in to Noah into the ark, as the Lord God commanded Noah. And the Lord God shut the ark without. And there was a flood for forty days and forty nights on the earth, and the water came and lifted up the ark, and stood high above the earth. And the water rose and increased quickly on the earth, and the ark was carried on top of the water. And the water on the earth increased exceedingly and covered all the high mountains that were under the sky. The water rose fifteen cubits and covered all the mountains.
And all flesh that moved on the earth perished: birds, and cattle, and wild beasts, and every creeping thing that moved on the earth, and every man. And everything that had the spirit of life, and everything that was on dry land, perished. And every living thing that was on the face of the whole earth was destroyed—from man, even to the cattle, to the reptiles, and to the birds of the air—they were destroyed from the earth. And Noah and those with him in the ark remained alone. And the water stood high on the earth for one hundred and fifty days. And God remembered Noah, and all the beasts, and all the livestock, and all the birds, and all the creeping things that were with him in the ark, and God brought a spirit upon the earth, and the waters ceased to rise. And the fountains of the deep and the openings of the heavens were closed, and the rain from heaven stopped. And the water began to decrease and leave the earth, and the water decreased after one hundred and fifty days.
Prokeimenon (Psalm 56), tone 7: Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, / for my soul trusts in You.
Verse: And I hope in the shadow of Your wing, until lawlessness will pass away.
Prokeimenon (Psalm 56), tone 7: Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for my soul has trusted in You.
Verse: And in the shadow of Your wings I will wait until the lawlessness passes away.
Reading parables. [Prov.10:1-22]
The son is wise and makes his father happy; the son is foolish because of his mother’s sadness. The treasures of the wicked are not used, but the truth will deliver you from death. The Lord will not kill a righteous soul with hunger, but He will bring down the lives of the wicked. The poverty of a husband humbles him: but the hands of the courageous are enriched. The wise son will be punished, but the foolish will be used as a servant: the wise son will be saved from the heat, but the wicked son will be lazy at the harvest. The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the righteous: but timeless weeping will cover the mouth of the wicked. The memory of the righteous is with praise: but the name of the wicked fades away. The wise man will accept the commandments with his heart, but the unprotected will falter with his sharp-tongued lips. He who walks simply walks in hope: but by corrupting his own ways he will be known. When you cast your eye with flattery, you gather up sorrows in your husband; when you reprove with boldness, you bring peace. The source of life is in the hand of the righteous: but destruction covers the mouth of the wicked. Hatred stirs up strife: but love covers all those who are unloving.
He who speaks wisdom from the lips, beats the heartless man with a rod. Wisdom will hide feelings, but the lips of the daring will approach contrition. The acquisition of the rich is a strong city: the destruction of the wicked is poverty. The deeds of the righteous are done, but the sins are more fruitful than the wicked. Punishment guards the paths of life: but with punishment he who is not convicted goes astray. The lips of the right cover up enmity: those who bring reproach are the craziest. You cannot avoid sin from verbosity; be gentle with your lips, and you will be understanding. The tongue of the righteous is kindled with silver, but the heart of the wicked will perish. The mouth of the righteous speaks high: but folly ends in poverty. The blessing of the Lord is on the head of the righteous: this makes him rich, and sorrow will not be placed in his heart.
