Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filthiness, and save us, Good, our souls.
The prayer begins with the words: “Vasilev Uranie Paraklite.”
“Vasilev” - we know this word thanks to the name Vasily - very popular among us. Basileus is a king or a leader, a king.
"Uranie" - Heavenly. Anyone familiar with astronomy or Greek mythology will immediately understand that we are talking about the sky.
So, “Vasilev Uranie” - to the Heavenly King.
"Paraklite" - Comforter. This word is better clarified for us if we make its literal Latin translation, where it is conveyed by the term advocatus “advocatus”, that is, when we call the Holy Spirit the Comforter, we mean our Advocate - the Intercessor, the One who intercedes for us, Whom we call for help, so that He makes a petition for us. The Holy Spirit is called the Advocate in accordance with the words of the Savior: When they betray you, do not worry about how or what to say; for in that hour it will be given to you what to say, for it is not you who will speak, but the Spirit of your Father who will speak in you. (Matthew 10:19-20)
“To Pneuma tis Alifias” - “To the Soul of Truth.”
Pneuma is a word associated with breathing. Here you can remember the word “pneumatic”.
Truth is one of the names of God.
“Oh pandahu paron ke ta panda pliron” - “Who is everywhere and fulfills everything.”
“Paron” – participle – “to be present”. That is, this is the One who is everywhere, no matter where we are. You cannot run away from God, you cannot hide from Him. The Lord is with me wherever I go. As the wise David says: I will ascend to heaven - there is the Lord, I will go down to the underworld - there is the Lord, nowhere can I hide from Him (Ps. 139:8). And He fills everything, revives everything.
“O Thysavros ton agatho” – a treasure of blessings.
Treasure is translated from Church Slavonic as repository, treasury.
“Agafon” is a word that is found in the Russian environment; it means a good-natured person, a kind person. Literally speaking, this is good, good.
We call God the Treasury of all good things. The Lord is the source and repository of all the most beautiful things in the world.
“Zois Horigos” – “life to the Giver.”
Zoya is another name that we know well. Zoya is life.
"Khorigos" is a word that refers us to the word "choir". What is a choir? A choir is a kind of singing group. And a choreg in Greek is a person who manages a choir; in a church, this is a regent or conductor of a choir. This expression calls God the Conductor of the world's musical work. The Lord is the Conductor of world existence, Khoreg.
“Elfe ke skinoson en imin” – “come and dwell in us.”
The word “tabernacle” is a tent, tent; for a long time the tabernacle was the first temple. This is a call for the Lord to dwell in us, to make us His tabernacle.
“Ke kafarison imas apo pasis kilidos” - “cleanse us from all filth.”
Let us remember the Kafars - medieval French heretics who considered themselves pure.
“Kilidos” is a stain (of sin that pollutes the soul).
“Ke soson, Agafe tas psikhas imon” - “and save, O Blessed One, our souls.”
“Psychas” is a word that we know thanks to the name of the science “psychology”.
