By Thy holy Incarnation, I have been set free from passions, and by Thy Resurrection, from the withered, I have been delivered, O Lord, to Thee.

And now the alphabetical hymns of St John Damascus:

A, in the beginning, O Lord, Thou didst create all things by Thy Word, and didst ordain them for Thy glory; and Thou didst make man upright, but he sinned and became a stranger to Thee. Therefore, grant us Thy mercy, that we may be delivered from our sins.

B, blessed be the name of the Lord, who hath made heaven and earth, and all things therein; and who is the King of glory, and the Power of the universe. Amen.

C, Christ, the true Light, didst come into this world, to enlighten those who sat in darkness and the shadow of death; and Thou didst give us Thy divine commandments, that we might walk in Thy truth and be saved. Amen.

D, David, the prophet and psalmist, sang before Thee, O Lord, with his whole heart, saying: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." Amen.

E, every creature is full of Thy glory, O Lord; for Thou art the Creator and Ruler of all things. And Thou didst make man in Thine own image, that he might know Thee and serve Thee. Amen.

F, faith is a precious gift from Thee, O Lord, by which we believe in Thee and are saved. For Thou didst say: "He that believeth on Me, the same believeth not on Me, but on Him that sent Me." Amen.

G, God, the Father of mercies, hath given us His only-begotten Son, to be our Saviour and Redeemer; and through Him we have access to Thee. Amen.

H, holy is Thy name, O Lord, for Thou art the King of glory, and no one can approach Thee save by Thy grace. And Thou didst say: "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life." Amen.

I, in Thee, O Lord, we put our trust; for Thou art our Rock and our Redeemer. And Thou didst say: "Blessed are they that put their trust in Thee." Amen.

J, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, didst come into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. For Thou didst say: "For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." Amen.

K, King of glory, O Lord, Thou art the Judge of all the earth; and Thou didst say: "As I live, saith the Lord God, surely with the blood of the wickedness that they have committed in My sight in this land, saith the Lord God, there shall the land be utterly filled with the slain." Amen.

L, Lord, Thou art the Light of our souls; and Thou didst say: "I am the Light of the world. He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." Amen.

M, mercy is from Thee, O Lord, for Thou art the God of all compassion; and Thou didst say: "Be merciful, even as your Father which is in heaven is merciful." Amen.

N, no one can come to Thee, except the Father draw him; for Thou didst say: "No man can come to Me, except the Father which hath sent Me draw him." Amen.

O, O Lord, Thou art our Refuge and Strength; and Thou didst say: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Amen.

P, praise be unto Thee, O Lord, for Thou art the God of all glory; and Thou didst say: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." Amen.

Q, quiet is Thy name, O Lord, for Thou art the King of peace; and Thou didst say: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you." Amen.

R, rest is from Thee, O Lord, for Thou didst create all things in six days, and didst rest on the seventh. And Thou didst say: "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." Amen.

S, salvation is of Thee, O Lord; for Thou art the Saviour of the world. And Thou didst say: "I am the Resurrection and the Life; he that believeth in Me, though he die, yet shall he live." Amen.

T, Thy throne, O Lord, is for ever and ever; and Thou didst say: "Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Thy dominion endureth throughout all generations." Amen.

U, understanding is from Thee, O Lord, for Thou art the God of wisdom; and Thou didst say: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." Amen.

V, victory is in Thee, O Lord, for Thou didst say: "To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with Me in My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne." Amen.

W, wisdom is from Thee, O Lord, for Thou art the God of all knowledge; and Thou didst say: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Amen.

Y, ye are the salt of the earth, O Lord, for Thou didst say: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." Amen.

Z, zeal for Thy house, O Lord, doth consume me; and Thou didst say: "If any man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him, and make Our abode with him." Amen.

Let the creation rejoice, let the heavens be glad, let them praise with their voices in joyful song: for Jesus Christ is our Saviour, who nailed our sins upon the Cross: and death having slain life for us, raised up the fallen Adam within, as a Lover of Man.

King of heaven and earth, incomprehensible in Thy will, Thou wast crucified for love of man. The adversary met Thee with sorrow, but received the righteous souls rejoicing: Adam, seeing Thy Creator in the depths, arose. Lo, a wonder! How death tasted all life; but since Thou wouldest enlighten the world by calling and saying: Arise, O dead one, glory be to Thee.

Mystic Virgins, bearing myrrh with zeal and tears, hastened to the tomb of thine, and finding not thy body thereof, by the angel was made known a new and glorious wonder: with gladness we cried: Arise, O Lord, Thou givest life to all the world.

Glory, and now:

All this shall be fulfilled as Isaiah prophesied: for thou hast borne two, and before the birth there was a doubling of thy pregnancy: for God being born, therefore didst thou cut off the bonds of the old order. But because of thy blessed womb bearing Him with thy hands, Thou dost not despise Thy servants who bring Thee offerings in Thy temple: but through the mercies of Thy good-womb, Thou dost show compassion upon us and pray for the salvation of our souls.
