When the All-holy Theotokos came down from on high,
She took upon herself the form of a stranger in this world.
Not by will of her own did she come to this,
But for our sake and for the salvation of the race.
Therefore, with compunction of heart we cry to her:
Rejoice, O pure one, thou who art more glorious than the cherubim
And beyond compare more radiant than the seraphim.
Raising Thee from the grave with all-powerful salvation, and Hell seeing a wonder, stood in awe, and the dead arose: Thy visage seeing rejoiceth with Thee, and man is glad, and my world singeth Thee forever.
Hail:
Thou art the Light darkened, Thou art the Resurrection of all, and Life of men, and didst raise to life all, holding in Thy deathly power, and smote the gates of Hades with Thy Word: and the dead saw the wonder of Thy miracles, and every creature rejoiceth at Thy resurrection, O Lover of mankind. Wherefore we all glorify Thee and sing Thy descent, and peace doth praise Thee evermore.
