Nailed Thee, Master, with nails and curse whereunto Thou wast compelled:
pricked with a spear we were made drunk, O Man's writing Thou didst tear asunder, freeing the world.

When he descended, by deceit being enticed,
into the depths of hell:
but thou, by nature, O God, and merciful,
didst descend for man's salvation,
and upon the cross didst bear, raising thee to life again.

Response: The Theotokos, have mercy on us.

Theotokos: Praising the Lady,
Who gave birth to the Rudder of men,
Soothe with unceasing and bitter compunction my passions,

The Saviour and the Prophets' sword was the Jewish multitude:
For the prophets of old, being true mysteries of light, could not slay them:
Thus also now, whom I preached then with envy,
They slew with malice.
But to us was given a life made death.

There was a death, but not held in the power of Hades, /
for though thou didst taste the word of death by thy will, /
yet wast thou raised by God the Immortal, /
lifting up the prisoners that were in hades, /
and joy instead of former grief, again changing it.

Theotokos: Disgraceful is thy and meagre visage in the sight of mortals / more than men's in the time of passion: / for Thou, O God-blessed, by Thy beauty and goodness dost show Thy divine essence: / but with Thy rod Thou smitest the strength of Thine enemies, speaking as one reading: / From my dust and from the grave arise.

Death doth withereth and corruption exerciseth Adam's condemnation, O Lady!
fruit of thy travail hath it brought forth:
for life thou didst bear,
delivering from corruption them that sing to thee.

The Law and commandment weakened, and sorrow went over me,
more than the anguish of a great mercy from Thee,
which Thou dost work two-fold in me,
O God, giver of life and salvation, much-praised.
