Master, pierced with nails and by thy oath,
thou didst invoke a curse upon us:
with a spear thou wast wounded in the side,
renting Adam's writing, freeing the world.

When he descended, by deceit being enticed,
unto the depths of hell:
but as man, and God in mercy,
he went down to seek,
and upon the cross bore thee up,
gave thee life again.

The Saviour and Prophet-killer was the Jewish multitude:
For the prophets of old, being true to the truth, did not slay those mysteries that were bright:
Even so now, He whom we preached then,
By envy they led to death.
But unto us was given a life made death.

There was a death, but not held in the power of Hades,
for though Thou didst taste the word of death by Thy will,
yet didst Thou rise again because God Immortal,
raising up the prisoners that were in hades,
and joy instead of former grief, changing again.

Theotokos: Disgraceful is thy and meagre appearance in the bodily sight / more than men’s, in the time of passion: / for by thy beauty and goodness thou didst reveal divinity: / but with thy rod thou smotest the strength of thine enemies, speaking the Word: / From my flesh and from the grave arise.

Death doth withereth and corruption exerciseth Adam's condemnation, O Lady!
fruit thereof hath brought forth:
for life thou didst bear,
delivering from corruption them that sing to thee.

The Law and commandment weakened me, and a sinner went my way,
more than the flesh with its sense of the deeper grace,
whereby Thou hast twofold nourishment,
O God, and salvation, much-sung.
