This prayer, glorifying the Holy Trinity, without naming the names of Her Holy Hypostases, contains the following meaning: God the Father! You, inseparably with the Son and the Spirit, possessing all perfections, alone are Holy! Son of God! You, with the Father and the Spirit, alone have creative power and omnipotence! Holy Spirit! You, with the Father and the Son, are alone not involved in death! Be merciful to us, your creation, and have mercy on us sinners!
This prayer was accepted by the entire Christian Church by special revelation. In the 5th century, during the reign of the Greek Emperor Theodosius II, under Patriarch Proclus, there was a terrible earthquake in Constantinople; people lived in the streets and squares out of fear. One day, during a nationwide prayer conducted by the patriarch in the main square to stop the earthquake, suddenly one boy from among those praying was lifted high into the air by an invisible hand and then lowered to the ground again. He announced that he heard Angels singing around the Throne of God: Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal. The people, hearing this, intensified their prayer and, repeating the words heard by the boy in the sky, added to them “Have mercy on us.” After this the earthquake stopped.
From repeating the word Holy three times, this prayer is called Trisagion, and because it originates from disembodied Spirits who sang the glory of God, it is also called Angelic or Seraphim.
