By the hymnography of the penitential season, the first tone is sung:
Semeón:
Thy grave, O warrior keeping watch, O dead ones by the descent of the great Angel were made alive, proclaiming to women the Resurrection. We glorify Thee, O Lover of necessities, we fall down before Thee, risen from the grave, and unto Thy Only God.
To the Crucifixion Thou wast fastened by a free will, in the grave lying having been dead, O life-giver, Thou didst hold firm with Thy strong death-struggle: for Thee trembled the gates of hell, Thou didst raise up from ages departed, as alone the lover of man.
O Theotokos,
Thee, O Mother of God, all-venerable and ever-blessed, and in the mystery of Thy conception, more glorious than the cherubim, and by love hastening to Thee for Thy mercy: Thou art our advocate before Thee, O most merciful; Thou hast prepared for us deliverance in distress, alone pure of every stain.
By the sticheron, sadlenen, glas a.
As it is written: "Like a stone sealed."
Widows to the grave came with sorrow, and an angelic vision of trembling: the grave is life, a wonder to behold: for this sake, having gone forth with the teaching of the resurrection: hell has delivered up its captives, for it is strong and mighty, and having been weakened, all was raised up, fear being destroyed by the sword.
On the Cross Thou wast pierced, O Life of all life, and in the dead Thou didst place the Immortal Lord; on the third day Thou didst rise again, raising Adam from corruption. For this we cry to Thee with strength, O Giver of Life, O Jesus Christ: Glory to Thy resurrection, glory to Thy descent, O Only Lover of Mankind.
Theotokos. It is fitting: Thy grave hath saved us.
O Lord, read, O Reader of hearts, Thou hast raised up those fallen into the deep pit of fierce ancestral sin and grievous sorrows; for Thou art the grace of forgiveness and help, the strong intercession, and Thou dost save Thy servants.
Thief's repentance in paradise joy, weep therefore, myrrh-bearers, proclaim gladness,
for having risen Thou, O Christ, hast given to Thy Theotokos the great mercy.
Stepánny:
When sorrow hath come upon me, hear my sickness, O Lord; to Thee do I cry.
The desertsunceasingly desireth divine peace for the sensible, except for.
To Thee, O Spirit, glory and praise be meet, even as to Thee, O Christ, for so it behooveth, and to Thy Mother also, our Lady, that we sing this hymn of glory.
Antiphon v.:
Upon thy mountains, O Lord, hast Thou uplifted me, enlightening Thee with good works, that I may praise Thee.
With Thy right hand Thou hast received the Word; preserve me, keep me, that sin's fire may not fall upon me.
By Thee, O Spirit, every creature is renewed, flowing again to the first: for Thou art equal in power and in word.
Antiphon gá:
Thou hast said to me, "Enter into the courts of the Lord," my spirit rejoiceth, and my heart gladeth.
In the house of the double doors great fear: there, in the judgment seat placed, all nations and tongues are judged.
Hallowed be Thy Name, glory, worship, and power, even as it behooves Thee, and ever meet it is fitting to offer: for there is none other essence, but faces alone.
